The Springfield Map was an interactive web project inspired by the “Them, Robot” episode, exploring how automation impacts everyday spaces through a playful but critical lens. The concept centered on reimagining familiar locations in Springfield as points of change, where robots have taken over roles traditionally held by humans. Each location became its own small narrative, turning the map into both a visual and storytelling experience.
The map itself was fully illustrated in Illustrator, carefully matching the recognizable style and color palette of the show while still feeling cohesive as a standalone design. Each icon represented a specific location, like bars, restaurants, or workplaces, all subtly altered to reflect automation replacing human labor. The goal was to keep it visually fun and nostalgic, while layering in a deeper idea about technology and society.
Once the illustrations were complete, I translated the assets into SVG files and built the experience using HTML and CSS. This allowed each element on the map to remain crisp, scalable, and interactive. Users could engage with different locations directly, turning the map into something more dynamic than a static image. The structure focused on keeping interactions simple but intentional, letting the visuals and concept carry the experience.
This project highlights my ability to combine illustration, coding, and concept development into one cohesive piece. It balances a familiar pop culture reference with a modern conversation about automation, using interaction and design to make the idea more engaging and accessible.
